Backroads
by Lee Blevins
I prefer the backroads:
the scenic historicisms
where traffic neither
flies nor crawls
but hums at constant.
Past vistas:
stone garage fronts
old paths with old names
dotted with bronze markers
about railroad this
and Civil War that
which you don't quite catch
as you pass them.
A more leisurely pace
where one can plot
future day trips.
Abandoned amusements
and renovated antiques,
good for a Sunday
except a Sunday
is the one day
they're not open.
Busy traveler,
you keep the interstate,
I will find my alternate
as my forefathers traveled . . .
drunk and with outstanding warrants.
